Article Archive How much potential exists for Tai Chi in Kern County?
Submitted by Larry Costner
To answer that question one must make some assumptions. Let's assume that only one percent of county residents end up practicing Tai Chi. I don't know. Is that unreasonable? Is it unreasonable that sometime in their lives, one out of 100 are drawn to Tai Chi? I really don't think so, but perhaps I'm an optimist. But humor me for the moment.
Region | Population | 1% Participation | World | 6,600,000,000 | 66,000,000 | U.S. | 301,000,000 | 3,010,000 | California | 36,457,000 | 364,570 | Kern County | 801,648 | 8,016 | Greater Bakersfield | 450,000 (est.) | 4,500 | |
What would be the result of one out of a hundred people embracing our favorite exercise? Take a look at the accompanying table.
If we confine our attention to just Greater Bakersfield, the “One Percent Solution” would imply 4,500 people practicing Tai Chi in parks, homes, and exercise venues throughout the city.
But let's be even more conservative in our estimates:
Maybe we can't hope for one out of a hundred to find Tai Chi. How about one out of a thousand? That would be about 450 Tai Chi players in the greater Bakersfield area.
Our current Federation membership only represents about one out of 10,000 area residents. I'm willing to bet that with perseverance we can do significantly better than that. Think big!
| Participation | What would our membership be? | | One out of 5,000 | 90 | | One out of 1,000 | 450 | | One out of 500 | 900 | | One out of 100 | 4,500 | |
