FAQ
Q: Just what is Tai Chi?
A: Tai Chi, also known as taijiquan, is a slow-motion, internal Chinese martial art that has significant health benefits attendant to its regular practice. There is an excellent general article about Tai Chi at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tai_chi that discusses the origins and health benefits of the art, as well as the history of the various 'flavors' of Tai Chi, such as Chen style, Yang style, Wu style, Wu/Hao style, and Sun style.
Q: What are the benefits of learning Tai Chi?
A: Like anything else, you get out of Tai Chi what you put into it. Many regular practitioners report better strength, balance, and flexibility. Most people also view Tai Chi as a great reliever of stress.
Q: What are the benefits of joining the Tai Chi Federation of Kern County?
A:
We want to be a source of information about Tai Chi in our area.
We want to promote the art to as many people as possible.
We want to help each other as well as help others.
If you have an interest in doing these things with us, we want you in our organization. Membership implies no commitments of any kind. There are no dues or fees. Your name will be added to our list of Supporters on this site, and we will use e-mail to let you know about local up-coming Tai Chi Federation events.
Q: Do I have to know how to 'do' Tai Chi to join?
A: No. We are happy to have beginners. We even are happy to have those who aren't practicing Tai Chi at all. The requirements for membership are a desire to promote Tai Chi and a willingness to get along with others who share that desire.
Q: How can I learn Tai Chi?
A: The best way to learn is in person from a competent teacher. [Books and DVDs are adjuncts at best. You need direct instruction.] Having said that, though, our organization doesn't exist just to sell you on a class or a Tai Chi school. However, several Tai Chi instructors in the Bakersfield/Kern County area are members of this organization, and are seeking students. We have posted on our Instructors page a list of those teachers in our area who have asked to be listed. The Tai Chi Federation of Kern County does not endorse any particular teacher or any particular style of Tai Chi.
Q: How long does it take to learn Tai Chi?
A: A lifetime. Enjoy the trip rather than fixating on the destination. There's no hurry, and you have the rest of your life to do it.
Q: How do I choose a Tai Chi teacher?
A: Check out our list of local Tai Chi instructors. There may be teachers who have chosen to not be listed by us -- so check out advertisements and yellow pages as well. Do some research about the kinds (styles) of Tai Chi that each instructor teaches. Choose a class to try out, then go observe a lesson by the teacher. (It's almost aways free to observe for a while.)
After you decide on a class, stick with it to give the class and yourself a chance. However, if things don't seem to be working out for you, don't be afraid to try some other teacher's class. Know this, though: Tai Chi takes time to learn. Don't expect quick results. And don't give up too easily.
[Tai Chi schools and classes charge fees according to their own policies. The Tai Chi Federation of Kern County receives no remuneration for referral services. Our list is maintained as a service to the community. ANY teacher may ask to be listed. Therefore: Buyer beware!]
Q: How much does it cost to join the Tai Chi Federation of Kern County?
A: There are no dues or fees associated with membership.
